Cody|Brock recognized for its historic renovation of
The Sea Scout Building in Palo Alto

October 2, 2015

The California Preservation Foundation recognized Cody|Brock with a 2015 Preservation Design Award for its historic renovation of The Sea Scout Building in Palo Alto. The California Preservation Foundation’s Preservation Design Award is a statewide hallmark, showcasing preservation design excellence and recognizing exemplary work in historic preservation, restoration, rehabilitation, sustainability, studies, reports and other significant categories in the preservation field.

Cody|Brock was selected by Cody Anderson Wasney Architects to perform the extensive renovation of the building, which was originally built by noted architect Birge Clark in 1941. The renovation required hoisting the building on steel beams and moving it 200 feet, then creating a new foundation 3.5 feet above the bay, devoid of floodwater, before restoring the building. This adaptive use carefully preserved the Birge Clark original design with its porthole windows and liner-like appearance, while creating new office and interior meeting spaces, and integrating the building into the natural coastline of the marsh.

Architect Chris Wasney noted, “The California Preservation Foundation is the foremost preservation group in the state, and the Preservation Design Award recognizes The Sea Scout Building project as among the best in the entire state.”
