City of Palo Alto Building Inspector Specialist and Plans Examiner Robert Dunbar Shares His Insights on ADA and Accessibility Requirements

August 9, 2017

As part of Cody|Brock’s summer Lunch ‘N’ Learn series, Project Engineers, Project Managers, Interns, and Superintendents had the opportunity to gain pertinent insights from Robert Dunbar, City of Palo Alto Building Inspector Specialist, Accessibility, and Plans Examiner. Dunbar provided a thorough review of the City of Palo Alto’s website, focusing on the Accessibility Pre-construction Checklist and the Plan Check Program. These items were implemented to reduce the high number of accessibility compliance corrections at final inspections. The presentation also addressed ADA requirements such as signage, bathroom accessibility, and parking requirements.

Cody|Brock Foreman Cameron Mardis learned that an adjustment as small as a ¼ inch is critical because, as he explained, “Even a difference this slight would not be considered ADA compliant.” Summer Intern Justin Carter described, “The class gave me a lot of information and resources regarding ADA compliance. The insights I gained will help me prepare for future project inspections, whether in Palo Alto or in any city.”

Attendees were treated to a delicious lunch of pesto chicken and BBQ tri-tip sliders, macaroni salad, artfully displayed fresh fruit, and homemade oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, all hand-crafted by Cody|Brock’s personal chef Eddie Vargas.
