Cody|Brock’s Lunch n’ Learn Program Brings in Industry Experts Like Ryan Billante, PE, Principal of BKG Structural Engineers to Engage with Interns and New Employees

In addition to hands-on learning experiences and education field trips, the Lunch n’ Learn program is another way Cody|Brock engages its interns and new employees. In this session, Ryan Billante, PE, Principal of BKG Structural Engineers discussed the structural nuances of a current Cody|Brock project in Palo Alto. He explained the triggers for a “Mandatory Retrofit” versus a “Voluntary Retrofit.” He also outlined the two primary building systems: 1.) Rigid – the building will move as one solid piece and 2.) Flexible – Types of shearwalls.

Project engineer Viviana Tacussis enjoyed learning about the structural design of buildings and the new technology available to provide smarter engineering solutions. “The Lunch n’ Learn with BKG Engineers improved my understanding of building structures which will be useful when working on future projects. I learned that the weakest points of a building are in the perimeter, so the first thing to look for is the anchorage at the perimeter. With structural retrofitting of older buildings being quite common nowadays, it was important to see different ways of achieving this.”

The “students” were also interested in fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP). The FRP system is designed to the specific requirements of each jobsite or condition and features the industry’s first code-listed laminate. FRP provides a high strength/stiffness-to-weight ratio and cost-effective solution compared to traditional methods.

Intern Connor Cody, Construction Management student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, was particularly interested in the information about Simpson materials. “At Cal Poly, we use a lot of Simpson Strong-Tie materials in our labs and building projects so I enjoyed learning more about them.” Simpson Strong-Tie® Composite Strengthening Systems™ (CSS) are engineered, specified, and installed to solve a host of structural deficiencies or demands in existing structures.
