Cody|Brock Team Members Learn the Importance of Collaborating with Architects During a Visit to AP+I Design

July 12, 2018

Emphasizing the hands-on education of our interns, project administrators, and project engineers, Cody|Brock orchestrated an educational trip to AP+I Design in Mountain View. Hosts Kurt Krueger, Associate AIA, LEED AP, and Shelly Hazlitt, LEED AP Principal, led an informal roundtable discussion on the benefits of collaboration between general contractor and architect, particularly in the early phases of budgeting and value engineering.

General contractors play a key role when it comes to scheduling. The architects stressed the importance of constant communication, especially regarding long-lead items that might hold up a project. In the field, the general contractor does the actual building, so they see the day-to-day progress on the job and what design elements may or may not be working. AP+I relies on constant communication with general contractors who might suggest solutions to potential design issues. AP+I noted the excellent rapport they have with Cody|Brock superintendents, resulting in issues resolved ahead of weekly meetings so that owners and/or developers realize that solutions have already been achieved.

Project Engineer Kaj Archibald really enjoyed exploring AP+I’s zero net building for the first time. “Their building shows the quality they put into their design and execution, while making a conscious effort to reduce our environmental footprint,” he explained. One of Kaj’s favorite design elements was the reuse of concrete walls as a bench. “I hope to work on more projects with AP+I in the future, especially projects that incorporate green design,” Kaj added.

Project Engineer Emily Neudecker noted, “I loved how environmentally friendly AP+I’s office is. They used their design knowledge and expertise and transformed their office into an inviting, bright, and creative atmosphere that is also environmentally sustainable. I can understand why their employees love working there!”
